Challenge #1: "Use Your Non Dominant Hand"

It is pretty  ironic that the first chapter in this book is "Use Your Non Dominant Hand." Due to a shoulder #injury, I've been in a sling on and off and have become quite proficient with my left hand!
But I guess I haven't really *noticed* things.  I've more or less been annoyed that I can't use my dominant arm as much, and have felt like life is being unfair. I've been feeling pretty negative and down about these physical limitations, slowing down and having to reevaluate my professional goals. 
Starting this book/project was actually an idea that came to me while #meditating (one of the few non physical activites I enjoy) because I am trying to change my mindset about what's happening in my life. 
Today I really THOUGHT about it while I was using my left hand for everything.  My arm was in a sling because of a long, busy weekend, so I didn't require any of the "reminders" that the book suggests. I had an awkward encounter with a barista this morning while I fumbled with opening a zipper on my wallet one-handed, but other than that it wasn't too difficult to use lefty for everything.  I'm kindof used to it. (Perhaps becoming #ambidextrous is the silver lining in all of this?!) If you're joining in on this challenge, you can draw a star or the back of your non dominant hand to remind you to use it. So far, brushing my teeth has been the most frustrating (and hilarious!) task! ♡

Lifted with my injured arm for the first time since bicep reattachment surgery. Curling a 1.25 lb micro plate vs a 50 lb dumbbell in the normal arm. Few things have greater restorative power on a cellular level than your own blood. Getting a little pump after months of inactivity made it feel better than it has in a long time.

First off, balance training is not directly linked to injury prevention.

Secondly, this doesn't look challenging but not everything needs to be heavy or high or fast. Even professional level athletes take it back to this level to work on the basics.

The eccentric impact control is what has the most direct influence on injury prevention.
•
Balance training on the other hand corrects muscle balance and recruitment of the core in relation to the limbs and proprioception.
•
These are secondary in relation but primary in training. If these imbalances and kinematic relations are not corrected then improving eccentric control and increasing impact stimulus won't work. You will only increase the chance of injury in training.

I love the Founder as an activation exercise to get the posterior chain firing💥 it's great for the desk worker or as a warm up to a training sess. This move comes from the Foundations Training which is full of great info- check em out when you have a chance.

1️⃣feet wider than hip distance apart, chest high 2️⃣hinge at hips rocking weight to back of the feet 3️⃣ keeping chest high, raise arms up beside head 👉🏻 concentrate on deep belly breathing. 🔑 as you hold the position think of pulling your tailbone AWAY from your hands to create tension through your core. 👉🏻 feel the burn...through the whole posterior chain (aka yo' backside). hold 20-30seconds, repeat 2x daily {video in previous post}

❌don't phone it in, you need to hold things tight and not just  hang out on your joints😣

TECHNIQUE TUESDAY

Do you have weak and unstable shoulders? Coming back from a shoulder injury? Enter the KB bottom up isometric hold. This simple exercise is to challenge your shoulder, wrist stability and strength. This is one of my staple exercises for shoulder rehab and it works wonders.

Simply pick a KB, start by holding the position for 30 seconds. A few things to make sure;

1) Try your best to keep your wrist level. Imagine the load from the KB will push you down and your elbow pushing it back up.

2) Try your best to keep your elbow level to the shoulder.

3) Keep the shoulders, hips, and feet square. Don't compensate.

4) Pick a light KB to start with. Trust me this isn't as easy as it might seem.

I was so excited to be outdoors that I ran so fast, my makeshift duct tape boot flew off. Since my bandages aren't supposed to get wet, Mother Tucker had to re-wrap my paw. She kept telling me to quit squirming, because I was making it difficult for her to do a good job.

Last week was a whirlwind. I got inspired! I fell out of a van. Oh yeah so I probably didn't tell you that part. My heel got caught on the bottom part of the door and I fell on my knees. I jammed my big toe and thought I broke it. I was terrified I couldn't workout. Thankfully it was just a deep bruise.

Last Friday I tried a full on jumping workout and was in severe pain so today I listened to my body and followed the modifier. 
Sweaty and out of breath I realized the modifier is a crazy good workout. 
I'm not skipping my workout because of an injury. I found a way. 
A couple of great takeaways:
-In the video to the right I was also amazed at how much I looked like Pee Wee Herman -I couldn't find a hair tie so my crazy hair is out. 80s hair band? Nope, just a bruised toe Max 30 workout.

On august 15 2016 I started working with a personal trainer with the goal to get into crossfit. My trainer was also a crossfit coach so he could get me there. This is how close I was, I had myself some fresh new nanos ready to go and my trainer had me doing the crossfit open workouts, I was almost ready, and then... On 18 Mach this year 7 months into training I fell at work tearing ligaments in my ankle. Complete tare of the ATFL and partial of the CFL. I had to stop training as it has taken 2 months to be paid and couldn't afford my trainer anymore. This time gave me a minute to reflect. Even though all that training saved my injury from being a lot worse I had not accomplished as much as I wanted. And yes that partially was due to set backs due to my back injury but i also had only lost 15kg in 7 months. This is due to my nutrition, I need to get my nutrition under control, it could have and should have been 30kgs!! So I'm not going back to PT I'm going to work on my nutrition (and of course still train) and get that right before wasting anymore money.

This is NOT how I wanted to end my Memorial Day weekend.  Sunday night at Sasquatch, I was on my may down to the mainstage to cover MGMT. While I was walking, all of the sudden my left ankle just gave out. This happens from time to time, and nothing drastic comes out of it... However, this time I  knew something wasn't right as it was really hard to put any pressure on it. I must have had an adrenaline rush as I was able to cover two more bands and make it back to my car which was parked a half a mile away from the venue carrying two gear bags. But when I awoke this morning, the pain was much worse. Not going to lie, this reminded me of 2005 when I thought I had sprained my other ankle, only to find out it was a minor bone break. I have been icing it all day and just bought a foot brace. Sadly, there is no way I can cover the last night of Sasquatch. Was really looking forward to covering The Shins as I have never seen them live and the last time they came to Seattle I had to pass due to a prior commitment. But my health is more important and if it wasn't for Janice intervening, I most likely would have gone and could've made injury much worse! Bench is creeping back. These medium-grip extra-long pauses moved pretty darned well today. 70kg for a bunch of singles and 65kg for a whack of triples, all with very long pauses. Shoulder felt solid and has been progressively less cranky which is a profound relief.

Firstly, lets take a look at how our immune system works and how it can protect us. The immune system is a communication network of defensive and offensive cells, most commonly the B and T cells that helps to defend the body (white blood cells). B cells produce antibodies that aid in attacking antigens in preparation for the T cells to finish the job. B cells work as a ‘look out’ for the T cells to prepare to fight. Like any other line of defence and systems, sometimes there can be ‘gaps’ and/or can be disrupted.

It turns out that the modern adult lifestyle isn’t that great for our health. The role of diet and exercise can play a big part on how our immune system functions. If you aren’t taking part in a regular exercise regime and making better food choices, you are putting yourself at risk this winter. Let’s take a look at how exercise can improve your immune system.

A study done by the University of New Mexico found that individuals who took part in a vigorous aerobic regime, their white blood cells rose 40%. They state that most of the body’s white blood cells are stored in tissue and vein walls and therefore the increased need for oxygen during exercise aids in increasing circulation resulting in movement of these cells into the blood stream. It has also been stated that this effect can last up to several hours following exercises and can also aid in fighting infections long term.

❓Is it safe to exercise when I am sick❓
Yes it is safe to exercise however only at a light-moderate intensity and away from others. You can change up your regime by walking outside with warm clothes or doing some exercise in the house. Although it is safe, it is recommended to rest when you have a fever.
