I remember the very first time I isolated Aspergillus versicolor. I was convinced that my culture was mixed with Penicillium and I could not figure out where it was coming from because my isolate looked totally pure. Turns out it WAS totally pure, and a coworker introduced me to Aspergillus versicolor!
Aspergillus versicolor produces two types of conidial heads: one being the typical swollen vesicle which produces loosely radiate biseriate phialides, the second type is lacking in the vesicle department and the metula and phialides arrange themselves in a way that looks almost exactly like Penicillium. What a trickster. 🤓
