Northwest area schoolboy boxing amateur champion @abdulk.1 performing close grip pull ups using a 60mm thick aid made by my welder.  The close grip aid will be available for sale at £65 which includes postage postage in the UK.  Can also be used for lat pulldown, seated row etc. 
Posterior upper back exercises such as chin ups, inverted rows etc are very important to reduce the incidence of injury. 
Work the opposing muscles group to create a balance.

It's amazing the extra care and precision required when holding Koa and say walking down the stairs, cleaning his bum or making a coffee. I have to be so much more present not only in my physical actions but in my intellectual ones as well. Yesterday during practice I realized that the postures should operate on these same principles of precise alignment. *

Many exercise enthusiasts complain of deep lower back pain/tension/discomfort. In our experience, the culprit tends to be your Quadratus Lumborum. A deep muscle that originates on your posterior iliac crest and inserts on the last rib and transverse process of  first through fourth lumbar vertebrae. Stretch it into submission by adding  this to your dynamic warm up. After twinging something in my left hip flexor after the weekend's running madness, I took a rest day yesterday and did some gentle (mainly core) exercise today, followed by some stretching. Not feeling particularly healthy at the moment (keep eating junk 🍫🍟) and I wasn't particularly feeling the workout tonight. Didn't work massively hard, but I guess it beats being on the sofa. At the very least, I got myself out in the lovely evening's sunshine. What is that? Sounds counterproductive right? It's actually quite effective. With support, proper form during training is achieved and can be maintained. With instability via suspension and vibration, recruitment of muscles is increased. .

So for example, if you struggle to hold a plank position either because pain kicks in or it becomes just too hard to hold, the longer you hold it, the more your form is going to break. As it breaks, you won't be targeting the right muscles anymore (which can lead to pain).

With a supported plank, you can hold the correct position longer using the target muscles (core muscles not back muscles). Add instability and it forces the target muscles to fire more during the correct hold. Why? The body craves stability. •Can I fix my limited Ankle Dorsiflexion?
It depends. If there is a structural/osseous anomaly involved with the talocrural joint, probably not. But with tight posterior leg soft-tissue or a joint restriction, probably.
Runners with decreased ankle DF increase their susceptibility to injury because if there is lack of motion here, compensation in motion occurs in that kinetic chain. For example, increased incidence of local injuries like plantar fasciosis, medial tibial stress syndrome and ankle sprains are due to increased ROM in the sub-talar joint, hyperpronation.
More proximally at the knee we see increased valgus collapse at the knee which can leave you susceptible to non-contact ACL injuries and patella-tracking injuries (PFPS). Even as far up as the hip: lack of ankle dorsiflexion doesn't allow full hip extension and a full stride during gait.
Anyone having difficulty with their IT-Band? Been attacking the GMed without progress? Look to the ankle.
Foam rolling and stretching can help but try some self-ankle mobilization as part of your dynamic warm-up. Going barefoot would allow proprioceptive feedback and maybe a little more motion.
Half-kneeling position and heel within 6" of knee, transfer your weight to the front foot, keeping that heel planted. Feel the stretch and return.
Adding a chop with Indian Clubs is great to incorporate a full body warm-up including self-cues out of knee valgus, avoiding the clubs. Step out further, 12" and feel a good posterior hip capsule stretch.💥

My personal CPET results 😉 I've been incredibly impressed by the POETTS CPET course so far and have learnt heaps. It's also been fascinating to hear the results of pilot trials 'prehabilitating' cancer patients. I'll be very interested to see the results of larger trials in the coming years. 
I'm a huge advocate of prehabilitation and exercise in patients with cardiac disease and am planning on bringing a lot more CPET guided management into my clinical practice. Looking forward to day 2 of the course! .

Northwest area schoolboy boxing champion 14 year old @abdulk.1. Developing upper body pulling strength via weighted pull ups using 10kg chains with full range of motion. 
So why is a strong back key to more punching power? Balance is key to everything. Boxing requires massive use of the front deltoid and to a lesser degree the pectorals. The arm is repeatedly thrust forward. Look at the three main punches in boxing – Straight Punches, Uppercuts, and Hooks, they repeatedly use shoulder flexion and extension. 
Boxing involves massive impact, when you hit something (or someone) the impact travels down your arm through you shoulder and then disperses through the muscles of the upper back. If your back lacks the stability to absorb this impact your shoulder takes the brunt of the impact – that leads to tears, dislocations and not as much power in the punch – like trying to fire a cannon out of a canoe.
Any movement that is opposite to punching will work your back. Retracting the shoulder blades (squeezing back) and depressing the shoulder girdle (dropping the shoulders) will work the back.

Taking care of your feet and ankles can be more complicated than you think! 
Everyone is different but high arches, low arches, bad shoes and good shoes can change your body's gait and movement patterns all the way up to your neck! Especially if you wear high heels!
Here's a couple exercises you can do to help keep your ankles mobile and strong, helping the joint stay healthy:
1. Use a resistance band across the top of your foot and point and flex sitting with your legs straight in front of you, laying down with your knee bent at 90 degrees and also straight up.
2. Now, with the resistance band, point your foot into circles. Using your ankle joint- not your whole leg. Do about 10 circles each direction (clockwise and counter)
3. find a stair and stand with half your foot on it and do 10 calf raises. Let your foot go down as far as you can comfortably- this is important to strengthen the front of your shin & helps prevent shin splints. 
4. Keeping your foot relaxed use a foam roller to release the back of your calf, especially where the big muscle (gastrocnemius) meets the long flat muscle (soleus) but not low on your Achilles' tendon. 
Releasing these muscles and strengthening your ankles/calves/shins can help prevent Achilles' tendon issues, plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, certain knee injuries and discomfort.

Do about 10 circles each direction (clockwise and counter) 3. find a stair and stand with half your foot on it and do 10 calf raises. Let your foot go down as far as you can comfortably- this is important to strengthen the front of your shin & helps prevent shin splints. 4. Keeping your foot relaxed use a foam roller to release the back of your calf, especially where the big muscle (gastrocnemius) meets the long flat muscle (soleus) but not low on your Achilles' tendon. Releasing these muscles and strengthening your ankles/calves/shins can help prevent Achilles' tendon issues, plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, certain knee injuries and discomfort.

This question came to us from @draloec . The question was how do to prepare ones wrist for things like planches and handstands.
▫
Wrist prep is a great question because so much of what we do needs it. You may be a bodyweight strength enthusiast who wants to have strong and flexible wrist for safe planches and Press handstands. You may be someone who wants to just have prehabbed wrist in case you trip and fall. Or you may just be interested in keeping your pimp-hand strong. Either way, we have one of our favorite tools.

This exercise here has different names depending on where you ask, but the steps remain the same. 
One, get into a desired push-up position. We recommend from your knees first until you get stronger.
▫
Two, place your shoulders above your wrist. Lean a bit forward if needed until you feel a slight stretch.
▫ 
Three, using the strength of your forearm, raise your palm off the ground then slowly lower it back down.
▫
What this exercise does is not only stretch your wrist, but builds strength there as well. With things like planches and handstands, our wrist aren't just getting stretched.
▫
They're also getting worked at that angle for balance. For that reason, it's not enough to just stretch. You have to also strengthen so you have the ability to resist falling while on your wrist in that fashion.

As you improve on this exercise, you can do it in a push-up position.
▫
As with ANY sort of prehab, reps should be kept higher. Don't go full maximal on joint prehab. That is silly at best and sad at worse.

Shown in the video, I do a few reps of this wrist prep exercise before I lean into a planche. Because of the stretch, I have no pain even when leaning so far past my hands.

Do you know your VMO? If not, you should. Your VMO (vastus medialis oblique) is an important muscle on the inside of your thigh that helps to stabilize your leg and keep you from injuring one of your favorite joints, your knee. If your goal is to stay away from any knee injuries, VMO work should be in your programming. Why?

Your VMO helps to make sure your kneecap tracks properly. While other quad muscles pull the kneecap outward, your VMO pulls it inward to help you keep it in balance. In addition, your VMO helps to keep your knee from caving in like you're doing the Tootsie Roll.
▫ 
The problem with this muscle is it's most activated in the top  15 degrees and bottom 15 degrees of knee bend. That means the top of the squat and the bottom. That becomes an issue because if you don't squat down low enough, the VMO doesn't get its full work and ends up too weak. This leads to issues like your kneecap not tracking properly and your leg collapsing on running, landing, and weightlifting type movements.

If you're the kind of person who lands a jump and your knee caves in like you're doing the Tootsie Roll, VMO work might be for you. Or if you squat and your knees cave in on the way up, you might benefit from adding some VMO work to your leg program.

One such exercise is the Poliquin-Stepup. Using an elevated surface and something to elevate your heels with, you perform step-ups as seen in the video. Make sure that the toes are pointed up so they DON'T help the working leg.

Benefits of this include more stable knees, better and safer landings, less steps needed to decelerate while running and sprinting, safer landings, and more.
